COOS BAY, Ore. - A magnitude 6.6 earthquake off the coast of Taiwan poses no tsunami threat to Oregon and the West Coast, the National Weather Service said.
Earthquakes are capable of producing tsunamis that can cross the Pacific.
The March 11, 2011, earthquake that damaged the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan spawned a tsunami that reached the West Coast, killing at least one person and damaging property.
And on January 26, 1700, a Cascadia Subduction Zone megaquake off the Pacific Northwest coast sent a tsunami across the sea to Japan.
