EUGENE, Ore. - President Donald Trump signed legislation Tuesday creating the Devil's Staircase Wilderness in the Oregon Coast Range northeast of Reedsport.
The public land legislation also creates the Frank and Jeanne Moore Wild Steelhead Special Management Area along the North Umpqua River and adds protections for other Oregon waterways.
“President Trump knows that federal lands are meant to provide both peace and prosperity for the American people, and signing this bill allows us to continue managing public lands in a balanced way,” Acting Secretary of the Interior David Bernhardt said in a statement. “This bill is extremely beneficial to the American people and I look forward to working with Congress and local communities to implement the many local conservation wins within the bill.”
The House and Senate passed the Natural Resources Management Act, which included the new Oregon wilderness area and special management area.

The law is formally known as S.47, the John D. Dingell Jr. Conservation, Management, and Recreation Act (formerly known as the Natural Resources Management Act).
It is made up of 100 individual bills, including the Oregon Wildlands Acts.
