The principal at Schirle Elementary School, Clinton Gertenrich, spent Monday night camping on the roof of his school.

"Oh god! That's crazy," Grady, a student at Schirle said while looking at the tent on the roof. "I was thinking, 'How is he going to go to the bathroom the whole time?'"

"I thought, he must be freezing to death," Mckenna, another student, said.

Gertenrich, better known as "Mr. G" live streamed around two hours of the camp out on Facebook.

"Principles do crazy things," he said.

It was all part of a bet. If the students raised $20,000 at the jog-a-thon, Mr. G, armed with a teddy bear and dressed in his P.J.s, would spend a night up top and read bedtime stories via Facebook live.

"Anything for kids,” Gertenrich said. “Anything for our community."

The students raised more than $26,000, so he had no choice but to follow through on his promise.

On Monday night, some of his students stopped by to see him of the roof.

"My dad said, ‘sleep tight!’" Cru, a student, said.

In an attempt to warm him up, others brought by hot chocolate. He taste-tested the drinks, and the donut, on the livestream. But the drinks only last so long.

"It was a little bit chilly,” Gertenrich said. “I'm not gonna lie; I didn't sleep too well."

He woke up at 1:30 in the morning, and never fell back asleep. A long, chilly night, but that’s not the only crazy thing he’s done for his school.

“A couple years ago I did a blue mohawk,” Gertenrich said. “I've had my head shaved."

It's all to encourage the students to get involved. The money raised during the jog-a-thon goes back into the school. Gertenrich said it helps stock the library, bring in special guests and fund field trips.

The next fundraiser for the school will be the auction in the spring.
