COOS BAY, Ore. -- The ongoing problems with Coos Bay's wastewater treatment system may soon be ending.

Construction of the city's new plant in Empire is seeing progress.

The work started earlier this year.

It will replace the existing plant on Fulton Avenue, which has malfunctioned several times in the last few months.

City officials say the Fulton plant is old and past its useful life.

The new plant will have greater capacity and new wastewater technology.

"Our wastewater treatment plants outfall into the bay and, so, newer technology, greater capacity, it will better treat the wastewater and thus improve water quality," said project engineer Jennifer Wirsing.

Wirsing says the new plant should be substantially completed by September of next year.
