Police arrest suspect in Brookings bank robbery

[UPDATE] Brookings Police arrested a suspect in connection to a bank robbery on Wednesday.

Brookings Police with assistance of Oregon State Police and Curry County Sheriff's Office, searched the area near Mill Street and Pacific Avenue for witnesses and surveillance video that could help identify the suspect.

Officers say, Loss Prevention Officers from a nearby Fred Meyers store alerted police after finding suspicious clothing inside the store's men's restroom suspected to be left behind by the bank robber.

At 6:00 p.m., a motel clerk told the man in the photo of the bank robbery had checked into the motel and paid with cash.

Officers arrested John Hall Cleaves at 6:15 p.m. for Robbery in the 2nd Degree and Theft in the 1st Degree. Cleaves was lodged into Curry County Jail.

A search of the area resulted in the seizure of a portion of the stolen money.


Brookings Police are searching for a male suspect who robbed the Rogue Federal Credit Union branch in Brookings Wednesday afternoon.

Officers say, the man walked into the branch at 1:30 p.m. and presented the teller a note demanding cash from her drawer. The man then fled on foot with less than $2,000.

The suspect is described as white man between the ages of 55 to 65-years-old, medium to heavy built, and is between 5'6 to 5'8 feet tall.
