Sheriff: Speed may have contributed to rollover crash


Curry County Sheriff's deputies responded to a crash on North Bank of Chetco River Road near Social Security River Bar on Tuesday night in Curry County.

According to deputies on scene, a 1999 Pontiac Convertible had left the roadway over an embankment, rolled over, and ejected the driver, Gabriel Parson,17, front passenger, Issabella Vermaak,18, and rear passenger, Travis Trevino Jr.,20, all from the Brookings area.

None were believed to have been wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

Trevino was able to crawl back to the roadway while Vermaak was located pinned under the front part of the vehicle.

Emergency crews were able to rescue Vermaak from underneath the vehicle. All three were taken to Sutter Coast Hospital in Crescent City, Ca. with minor to serious injuries.

Deputies located unopened alcoholic beverages in and around the vehicle. They believe speed may have been a factor in the crash.

On Wednesday, Trevino was airlifted to Sacred Heart Hospital to be treated for injuries associated with the crash. Both Parson and Vermaak have been released from the hospital with minor injuries.

CCSO are continuing their investigation into the crash along with with Oregon State Police. All information will be sent to Curry County District Attorney's Office and Juvenile Department for consideration of criminal charges for Reckless Driving, Reckless Endangering and Assault
