Sheriff: Watch for unfamiliar rural mail vehicles, carriers after thefts from delivery car

CRESWELL, Ore. - The sheriff asks rural residents to keep an eye out for unfamiliar mail vehicles or carriers after someone stole the US MAIL magnets, a Postal Service safety vest and an amber light from a rural carrier's car.

The investigation started Saturday with a report at 7:40 a.m. about the theft of a white Subaru Legacy from the Creswell Post Office. The Subaru is used to deliver mail in rural areas.

The stolen car was recovered around 11 a.m. in Cottage Grove.

The vehicle was undamaged, but the US MAIL magnets, safety vest and light were all missing.

"The Lane County Sheriff’s Office is asking community members to be on the lookout for any rural mail vehicles or carriers they are not familiar with, and to report suspicious behavior such as the removal of mail from multiple mailboxes to 541-682-4141, referencing Sheriff’s Office case number 18-6431," the sheriff's office said Monday morning.
