COOS BAY, Ore. - Southwestern Oregon Community College joins the ranks of Oregon State University with it's latest recognition, with the tutoring program at Southwestern being recognized as an internationally certified program.
School officials say the certification not only sets professional standards of skill and training for tutors, but also increases program credibility for administrators.
"We're hoping that they can take the skills that they've learned here as tutors and either transfer them to just their own study habits," said Meredith Stone, the Transitional Education Director. "Maybe their going on to a four year institution, they help their classmates, they can help their friends, their family, and it may even help them find employment."
Stone says tutors can earn certificates after completing a required amount of tutoring hours.
"I plan on going to med school, so the MCAT is basically the SAT of sciences, so when I'm tutoring someone in chemistry or biology, it's good for me because it helps me relearn the subject and achieve a high level of mastery of it," said Christopher Smith, a tutor at SOCC.
