Sutherlin woman dies in fatal two-vehicle crash on I-5
SUTHERLIN, Ore. - One woman passed away following a two-vehicle crash on I-5 in Sutherlin early on Sunday morning.
At approximately 3:30 a.m., Oregon State Police Troopers responded to a crash located at milepost 131, about two miles north of Roseburg. The deceased has been identified as Jennifer Cruz, 34.
Based on preliminary information, Troopers determined that a semi tractor-trailer, operated by Kerry Kippes, 43, was northbound on I-5 when a 2008 Chrysler minivan, operated by Brandy Haga, 29, failed to see the semi in the slow lane in front of her and drove into the back of the trailer.
Kippes was not injured, and is cooperating with the investigation.
Haga and the three passengers in her vehicle were transported to an area hospital. Cruz later died at the hospital after succumbing to injuries she sustained the crash, and preliminary investigations reveal that she was not wearing her seatbelt at the time of the accident.
The other passengers, Desiree Urena, 30, and Amanda Castro, both from Sutherlin, are being treated at an area hospital for unknown injuries.
At this time, the investigation is still open, but it does not appear that any criminal charges will be filed.
