WINSTON, Ore. -- Winston's city council voted to terminate city manager David VanDermark at its meeting Monday night.
The council briefly discussed the matter near the end of the meeting before voting unanimously to terminate the contract with VanDermark.
You can hear audio of the council meeting at this link: http://winstoncity.org/city_council/mp3/2015-08-03.MP3. The brief discussion and termination of the city manager takes place around the 1:01 (1 hour & 1 minute) mark.
VanDermark was asked to turn in his keys, which can be heard on the recording. "I don't think you need a motion for that councilors; it's standard procedure," said VanDermark as the sound of jangling keys was was picked up by the microphones.
"May I ask ... maybe I can't, I don't know ... this is, as you can probably imagine, a little bit of a surprise," said VanDermark immediately following the vote. "Is there any specific sense of things that you could give me because I was not getting any sense that I wasn't performing to your satisfaction. I know there are frustrations about a couple projects."
A board member can be heard replying, "I don't think that's what we're trying to say. We're just looking for maybe some new direction; some new eyes ... I think we have a lot of assets out there that we need to bring back together."
