DANVILLE, Va. (WSET) -- Danville Police, along with several law enforcement agencies in North Carolina, and the FBI are actively searching for a man accused of abducting his biological seven-month-old from a gas station in Danville, Virginia.
Police said Carl Ray Kennedy, 51, is armed and dangerous and they believe Emma Grace Kennedy is in extreme danger.
Here is a timeline of events:
SUNDAY JUNE 3
The FBI said Emma Grace Kennedy was abducted from the Kwik Mart on Riverside Drive in Danville around 7:55 p.m. by her non-custodial father, Carl Ray Kennedy.
They said he assaulted Emma Grace's mother and took Emma Grace; family said Kennedy tried to take the vehicle with Emma inside, but when he couldn't they said he punched her mother and took off with the baby.
"The lady was in the driving seat. He was beating her and opened the back side door and took a baby," said Hewe Jayawardena, the Kwik Stop owner.
Family said he followed Emma's mother, Kristen Murphy, to the gas station after threatening her on social media and even showing up at the family's home. They said this happened after Murphy broke things off with Kennedy a couple months ago.
"He has been threatening our family for quite some time now. He had a knife and he does have other weapons to our knowledge," said Emma's aunt, Amy Metzger. "I think his last words to my sister were that you'll never see the baby again."
At the time of the abduction, Carl Kennedy was driving a gold Suzuki that had front-end damage on the left side of the vehicle with N.C. tags FAA-1873; however these tags are registered to a Dodge truck.
MONDAY JUNE 4
An Amber Alert was issued for seven-month-old Emma Grace Kennedy early Monday morning, around 1 a.m.
Around 2:15 a.m., police issued a description of Carl Ray Kennedy, saying he has a number of tattoos including a skull on his left forearm, a skull with a bandanna over the mouth on right forearm, an eye tattoo on the back of his right hand, on the upper right arm a pitbull with american bulldog written under it, and a wizard on his left upper arm.
Around 9:30 a.m., police said that they determined Kennedy has access to other vehicles including a burgundy Toyota Camry, a blue Jeep Cherokee, and Dodge Truck.
At 11:40 a.m., state police issued an alert to keep an eye out for two different license plates: EKZ-5093 or FAA-1873. There's also an emblem on the vehicle that says, "Johnny's Auto Sales."
Around 7:40 p.m., police said Carl Ray Kennedy was possibly seen in the Seven Spring, North Carolina area and headed to Oak Island.
At 8:45 p.m., state police issued a warning that Kennedy should be considered armed and dangerous.
TUESDAY JUNE 5
Police in the Durham area of North Carolina said they got a call around 1:30 a.m. from someone who said a man tried to sell them a baby.
Investigators said the description of the man did not completely match that of Carl Ray Kennedy and Danville Police said the alleged attempted sale of a child was not a credible lead in the search for Emma.
The child's aunt said there was no new information Tuesday morning and they are desperately hoping baby Emma comes home.
Carl Ray Kennedy is a registered sex offender, described as being 5-foot-8, 170 pounds, with green eyes and short gray hair. He was last seen wearing a brown short-sleeved shirt, gray shorts, and black and white Sketchers.
Emma Grace Kennedy was last seen wearing a light blue onesie with dots and a white rabbit on the left leg.
According to court records, Carl Kennedy has several pending charges including, felony possession of cocaine, failure to stop at a red light, and injury to property.
On top of his criminal record, family members say he has health issues and suffers from seizures.
