The Cabell County Sheriff's Department has released the names of a mother and child killed and the name of a second child injured in a West Virginia shooting Friday.

Sheriff Chuck Zerkle said it happened about 1:15 p.m. Friday in the 2400 block of Benedict Road in Culloden. Zerkle said it was a domestic situation. Zerkle said the mother, 39-year-old Leah Cart, and her 5-year old daughter, Olivia Cart, were killed and Leah Cart's 7-year old son, Jonah Cart, is in grave condition following the shooting. The sheriff said authorities are still investigating, but they believe the shooter is dead.

Deputies said the father's of the children received a text message from the mother that made him rush home.

The sheriff said the incident was confined to the residence and the community is not in danger. He said it is a very difficult situation for the community.

"It's just a bad day for everyone," Zerkle said. "It's tough for law enforcement; we all have kids."

Zerkle said there will be grief counselors Monday at Milton and Culloden elementaries, where the children went to school.

West Virginia State Police are assisting in the investigation.
