High School Football Preview 2017: Cottage Grove Lions

Cottage Grove Head Coach Gary Roberts previews the 2017 season with KVAL Sports.

Cottage Grove, Ore. - As the returning 4A State runner-ups from 2016, "we're not going to surprise anybody this year," said Cottage Grove Head Football Coach Gary Roberts. The Lions lost star QB Blake Sentman and WR Kory Parent from last year's Sky-Em League championship team, but return 7-8 starters on both sides of the ball who played in the 2016 state title game (a 35-21 loss to North Bend). Dylan Graves is in line to start at quarterback, and he'll be tutored by one of the more accomplished high school quarterbacks the Willamette Valley has seen in recent years. Jordan Johnson, the 2009 6A state player of the year as Sheldon's quarterback, led the Irish to the state title in 2007 and 2009.

"When he talks to our kids, they know that he knows what he's talking about because he's been there," Roberts said of Johnson. The Sheldon grad played collegiately at Montana, where he was 28-11 as a starter and launched 78 career touchdown passes.

While at Sheldon, Jordan was coached by none other than his father, Marty, who also joined the Lions' staff last summer.
